"Paving Tile Process"

Materials Needed:

" luan or  plywood substrate

Foamcoat Sand for thickening

Supersaturated for Glazes

Tape for joints

How to do it ? 1 Thicken Foamcoat with sand. 2 Mask grout areas with " tape. 3 Apply skim coat of Foamcoat mixture to " substrate. 4 Let dry thoroughly. 5 Apply second skim coat over first. 6 Let set. 7 Pull tape. 8 Let dry thoroughly. 9 Tint Foamcoat mixture with terra cotta-esque color. 10 Lay in tinted Foamcoat mixture in selected areas. 11 Knock down texture in selected areas. 12 Apply light glaze on light tiles. 13 Apply dark glaze on light tiles, allow to fall into low spots. 14 Wipe off dark glaze from high spots. 15 Mix dark umber glaze, apply to red tiles, wipe off high spots. 16 Mix terra cotta glaze, apply to selected tiles. 17 Tint Foamcoat mix to "concrete" grey. 18 Apply selectively to joint areas and as skim to select tiles. 19 Apply dark glazes as distress where indicated.

FoamCoat
Foamcoat is a water-based, flame retarding protective coating for Styrofoam and polystyrene foams. It is often mixed with FlexBond, as it was for the project described in these pages. Whether diluted or used alone, Foamcoat dries to a hard durable coating that resists chipping and cracking, yet can be sanded smooth or carved with detailing. Foamcoat is often used as a texturing agent to create custom patterns like bark or stone work.

Supersaturated RoscoPaint
One of Rosco’s three ranges of scenic paints, Supersaturated is specially suited to the glazing techniques described in this brochure. The range includes 23 brilliant, dye-like colors. Supersaturated with pigment, the colors are formulated to be diluted with substantial quantities of water while retaining binder strength. This paint adheres to most scenic I surfaces, including muslin, plastic and metal and dries to a completely matte, non-reflective finish.

Clear acrylic glazes
These clear acrylic mediums are designed to be diluted with water and applied as an overcoat to a painted surface. Either can be mixed with Rosco paints for additional binder strength. In some shops, these products also serve as the binder for dry pigments and bronzing powders.
