Alternative Uses for Gel Filters

Alternative Uses for Gel Filters

Gel has come a long way since Shakespearean-era theatre, when light was commonly filtered by the use of red wine and other colored water, or silk, and later actual gelatin. We all know the typical uses for gel in theatrical lighting, but let’s take a look at some additional applications for those extra sheets you may have lying around.

Table-Setting:

Add a pop of color to your table at dinner or brunch by cutting out clever shapes from your gel sheets, and choose colors that compliment the hues of your food, drink, and other table dressings. Use clear plates for a modern look!

Clothing:

Have a ton of swatch books collecting dust? Turn them into a dress!

Art Installations:

Create your own modern art with the use of large gel sheets cut into geometric shapes. Adhere them to clear plexiglass, hang them from the ceiling, overlay the sheets to create custom hues; the possibilities are endless!

Rainbow Effect Photography:

There’s no limit to what you can do with gel filters and your studio lighting. Create anything from simple, 1-2 tone looks to vibrant rainbows like the one above!

DIY Stained Glass:

Lots of DIY-ers are turning to gel to transform their indoor lighting and windows. Stained glass is a popular project for party, home, and even dorm décor. With the hundreds of color gel options you have to choose from, it’s easy to see why!
