Back to School: Gobos, Colors, and Choices, Oh My!
Last time we discussed some gobo basics. Today we’re covering the advanced topic of COLORS! If you have decided to produce a gobo in color, you may choose to produce it as a Cool Ink Gobo, Cool Ink HD, or glass.Cool Ink gobos and Cool Ink HD gobos require a specific type of ellipsoidal or gobo projector. They require a LED fixture to project the gobo without melting the Cool Ink gobo. StageSpot tries to keep an updated list of LED fixtures approved for use with Cool Ink gobos. You can review the list here. If you need a color or black and white shaded gobo and cannot use a Cool Ink approved LED fixture, glass gobos are the way to go. Glass is also recommended for long-term use. For instance, in permanent installation. Many companies prominently display their logo in lights in their lobby, glass gobos help achieve this effect. They can last for ages when properly used and cared for.Glass gobos are priced by number of colors. White or clear does not count for this color equation. Black, while not projected, is necessary to block any undesired light and is counted the color equation. A black and white gobo is the same price as a 1-color gobo. So if your image is just blue, it will be a two-color gobo. If you want your image to be blue with no clear projected, your gobo will need to be a two-color gobo: black plus your color. While many choose to forgo the expense of a second color, it can really make an impact in projection. This is a 1-color gobo. Seems great on paper, but can result in a slightly blurry appearance when projected. This blue and black image is a two-color gobo. It is recommended if you need your color gobo projected clearly. Here are both images projected side by side. The 1-color option is shown on the left and the two-color option is projected on the right. If your logo or image contains more than two colors, it is pretty simple; you will need a full color or multi color gobo. This is necessary for everything from complex mosaics to hyper realistic photographic images.Who wouldn’t want a lion on their wall?Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any further gobo questions.
